Life was not easy for Balu early on but he has defied all odds to become a fully qualified boxing coach, and now working as a full-time boxing coach at GV Raja Sports School in Trivandrum, Kerala, since 2019.

At the age of 10 Balu reached the city of Cochin as an unaccompanied child. The police rescued Balu and handed over to Don Bosco Sneha Bhavan to provide the child with care and protection. He learnt to read and write here. He showed interest in boxing classes held at Don Bosco orphanage. The then boxing instructor noticed this and helped him to get admission in Sports Authority of India (SAI) coaching centre in Kollam. From class 6 to 12 balu studied at SAI. During every vacation, he visited Don Bosco and took part in the intensive vacation boxing classes and championships at Kochi.

Don Bosco supported Balu to pursue a diploma course in sports coaching from national institute of sports and this helped him to find a job as a boxing coach.
